Senior Director of Safety and School Support, Office of Safety and Prevention Partnerships
Position Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Safety and Prevention Partnerships, the Senior Director supervises and manages the safety and security team including Directors and their staff. The Senior Director is also responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to safety and security, working with outside agencies, such as the New York Police Department (NYPD’s) School Safety Division, local precincts, the New York City Transit Authority, and other city agencies in order to foster a coordinated approach to school safety. The Senior Director also helps ensure that high-need schools receive the support and assistance necessary to facilitate the improvement of Department of Education (DOE) schools’ climate and culture. Under the supervision and oversight of the Chief of Safety and Prevention Partnerships, the Senior Director of Safety and School Support directs and manages the Borough Safety Directors and ensures that their work in the field is coordinated with the policies and procedures of the DOE. Performs related work.

Direct Reports: Borough Safety Directors, Director of Emergency Readiness, Safety and Security, Senior Manager of School Safety Transformation, Director of Crisis Intervention and School Support and associated teams.
Key Relationships: Superintendents, Principals, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), State Education Department (SED), United States Department of Education, NYPD, Fire Department NY (FDNY), NYC Department of Probation, NYC Department of Correction (DOC), Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety (ONS), NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM), NY Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), NYS Office of Family and Children Services, and upper-level managers of other DOE divisions and offices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provides overall direction, leadership and control over the safety, security and emergency readiness staff and the administration of functions and operations of these units. · Develops, formulates, promulgates, and implements critical policies and procedures. · Establishes and maintains lines of communication with officials at all levels within the school system, as well as public and private external organizations. · Directs the planning of long-term studies of safety related functions, operations, goals and objectives to limit redundancies and improve program effectiveness. · Manages and directs the day-to-day operations of managers who are responsible for the following areas: safety and security of school-based issues, administrative offices and senior leadership members; emergency preparedness and management; data systems, school safety plans and technical assistance; and safety – related initiatives and partnerships. · Monitors and directs the day-to-day operations of the field-based work of the Borough Safety Directors to ensure their work is closely aligned to Central policies and procedures. · Coordinates the intervention approach for all high need schools: o leads intervention/assessment teams in regard to matters of safety, writes and reviews all reports and provides on-going technical assistance to schools; o develops and refines tools and templates for use in and with schools; and o coordinates responses to daily safety emergencies in schools. · Oversees and supervises the emergency management and preparedness team who are responsible for: o timely and accurate completion of School Safety Plan; o system-wide Emergency Response Plan for DOE; and o collaborations and coordination with NYPD, FDNY, DOT, DOHMH and other city agencies. · Oversees and manages the coordination of safety issues throughout the Department of Education: o coordinates with NYPD, the implementation of the Unannounced Scanning Initiative; o provides follow-up on occurrence reports from schools; and o responds to daily school-based incidents/crises needing immediate support. · Represents the Chief in numerous venues: o safety-related conversations with city officials and elected officials; o acts as liaison to School Safety Division, Transit, Local Precincts, and Housing to ensure a coordinated approach to school safety; o prepares and makes presentations for the Senior Executive Director on safety issues; and o works with parents, students, and other community members to address student/staff concerns regarding safety and security and student discipline. · Works closely with Executive Directors within the Office of Safety and Prevention Partnerships to ensure a coordinated, cohesive approach to ensuring safe, supportive learning environments for all members of the school community.
Qualification Requirements:
Must currently possess a New York State Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL). Please Note: We do not accept internship certificates.

Preferred
· Three (3) years of successful experience as a public or private school principal and/or major supervisory and curriculum experience at the central office level. · Respected, a highly skilled instructional leader with broad experience as an educator across roles and student populations, including general education, English Language Learners, and special education. · Experience in improving outcomes for all students and in leadership development. · Experience in safety and security. · Commitment to outcome-based accountability, data-driven decision-making, differentiated instruction, and continuous adult learning as drivers of improved student outcomes. · Sophisticated understanding and ability to apply theories of and effective practices for: o student learning, growth and development; o group process, communications, and organizational planning; o professional development; and o differentiated strategies especially for high-needs students. · Extensive experience in staff management to achieve common goals, including supervisory and evaluative experience. · Sophisticated understanding and ability to apply theories of student growth and youth development. · Extensive expertise and detailed understanding of the operations and structure of the DOE. · Strong understanding of instructional expectations in common core learning. · Excellent and effective communication skills, including the ability to write well and make clear, concise verbal presentations. · An in-depth knowledge of City and State agency operations, policies and key initiatives. · Ability to travel and attend evening/weekend meetings.
Salary: $163,636 - $180,000
