Executive Director, Public Schools Athletic League, PSAL
Position Summary: The mission of the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) is to provide opportunities for educating students in physical fitness, character development, and socialization skills through an athletic program that fosters teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. During the New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) school year, 50,000+ student athletes, who represent approximately 3,000 school based teams, compete in 20,000 PSAL contests within 46 PSAL sports.
The Executive Director provides strategic and operational leadership to advance the mission, vision, and priorities of the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL). Serving as a key advisor and partner to the Senior Executive Director, this role ensures cohesive alignment across all PSAL programs, initiatives, and operations while fostering collaboration and accountability throughout the organization. Under the direction of the Senior Executive Director, in collaboration with the PSAL Cabinet, the Executive Director develops and implements instructional communication, stakeholder engagement advisory groups, and internal collaborative team supervision and coordination that reinforces PSAL’s strategic goals. Under the direction of the Senior Executive Director, the position represents PSAL in high level meetings with City and State agencies, manages critical relationships with partners and community stakeholders, and ensures PSAL’s work reflects the priorities of NYCPS. The Executive Director will support strategic priorities, coordinate with internal collaborative team members and external NYCPS stakeholders to complete relevant administrative tasks. Direct Reports: Staff Administrator, Assistant Director of Programming, Compliance, and Data Strategy
Key Relationships: NYCPS Central divisions, school administrators, school athletic directors and coaches, external partners.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, direction, and support on a broad range of policy, strategic, managerial, logistical, and administrative areas with and on behalf of the Senior Executive Director.
- Develop and deliver professional learning curriculum and resources for the purposes of training internal and external staff members, including sports commissioners, supervisors, sports assignors, officials, and independent contractors who work within the PSAL program.
- Manage and supervise the development of project plans that align with established goals/objectives for new and existing PSAL office initiatives.
- Provide high level operational supervision for high priority projects.
- Provide educational insight on standardization of office wide evaluation tools and development of high level reports (both external and internal) including those required by State and City mandates.
- Support supervision, evaluation, and shared learning objectives strategy for staff members to promote collaborative execution on initiatives.
- Manage PSAL principals and athletic directors professional learning modules, communications, and advisory council schedules and agendas.
- Support PSAL Cabinet with office goal setting, team participation, supervision, and evaluation of key indicators to monitor progress towards goals.
- Represent the Senior Executive Director at high level internal and external meetings, particularly those involving senior staff and agencies such as SED, City agencies, and outside organizations.
- Support the Senior Executive Director to implement the vision, direction, and positive culture for the organization.
- Manage Title IX Compliance to ensure equal athletic opportunities for all students in the PSAL program.
- Advise the Senior Executive Director on matters relating to the sports program for the students of New York City and serves as a member of the PSAL Cabinet that provides recommendations and guidance on matters that impact sports programming.
- Identify areas of sports programming that require review, development, and/or additional support.
- Organize, manage, and facilitate sharing of best practices in sports programming.
- Develop guidance and training resources to assist and support school administrators with the development and maintenance of strong sports programs.
- Design and implement structures to cultivate a work environment that is reflective of PSAL’s mission, value, ethics, expectations, and goals.
- Support the Senior Executive Director and PSAL Cabinet with supervision of all internal staff to organize sports season parameters, support sports season management, and support PSAL sports program implementation.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
Must currently possess or will possess by date of hire, New York State certification as a school district administrator (SDA) or school district leader (SDL); or the Administrator Certificate plus Superintendent extension. Please Note: We do not accept internship certificates.

Preferred
- Experience in management and communication role within a large organization.

- Project management skills using data driven metrics.
- Ability to communicate effectively and confidently, both spoken and written.

- Experience in enhancing the quality of customer service in a large organization.

Salary: $152,070 – $210,000
