Director of Youth Development Programs, OSPP

Position Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the Executive Director of School Culture and Climate, the Director of Youth Development Programs leads the design, management, and oversight of youth development initiatives within the Office of Safety and Prevention Partnerships (OSPP). This role is responsible for operationalizing OSPP priorities through youth development strategies that integrate social-emotional learning and restorative practices to strengthen positive school culture and climate across New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). Performs related work.

Reports to: Executive Director of School Culture and Climate

Direct Reports: Senior Administrators of SEL; Senior Administrators of SEL and Design; Senior Administrators of SEL and Academic Integration; Senior Administrators of School Services; Citywide Director of Restorative Justice Programs; Citywide Director of LGBTQ+ Programs; and Gender Equity Coordinator.

Key Relationships: Works closely with central and field staff as well as external agencies and community partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for youth development and restorative practices within the Office of Safety and Prevention Partnerships (OSPP), advancing a coherent, citywide approach to school climate, relationships, belonging, respect for all, and student engagement.
• Translate OSPP climate and culture priorities into coordinated, equity centered, and trauma responsive strategies across youth development, restorative practices, and social‑emotional learning, aligned with prevention, discipline reform, and student engagement goals.
• Direct the citywide implementation of social‑emotional learning (SEL) and restorative practices across NYCPS schools.
• Ensure coherence between central guidance, professional learning, and school based practice to support consistent, high quality implementation.
• Supervise and support the Citywide Director of Restorative Practices by setting clear goals, priorities, accountability measures, and implementation expectations.
• Provide strategic oversight of youth development programming and staff to strengthen student well being, social‑emotional and academic integration in inclusive school environments.
• Ensure social-emotional learning and restorative practices are embedded as a foundational, identity affirming approach to strengthening relationships, addressing harm, and improving school climate, prioritizing historically marginalized students, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, gender equity, student voice, and respect for all lived experiences.
• Partner with school leaders, central offices, community based organizations, families, and external stakeholders to align restorative practices and school climate initiatives.
• Expand trusted adult connections for students through coordinated partnerships and aligned implementation.
• Monitor and analyze implementation, discipline, participation, attendance, engagement, and school climate data to assess impact and identify disparities. Elevate best practices, address systemic barriers, and guide continuous improvement.
• Provide regular updates, insights, and strategic recommendations to the Executive Director.

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

Must currently possess or will possess by date of hire, New York State certification as a school district administrator (SDA) or school district leader (SDL); or the Administrator Certificate plus Superintendent extension. Please Note: We do not accept internship certificates.

Preferred

• Prior experience in high level school support leadership; ability to ensure students learn in a nurturing and safe environment and promote positive school culture and youth development in schools.
• At least ten (10) years of prior pedagogic experience (e.g., as a high school teacher) in addition to three years of experience as a superintendent or principal.
• Strategic planning and organizational development experience.
• Knowledge of Chancellor Regulations, State Regulations and Law, the NYC Discipline Code, and other related documents and policies that relate to school culture, youth development, diversity and progressive discipline.
• Knowledge and experience dealing with community based organizations and City agencies.
• Evidence of high standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in professional matters; ability to work well with staff and school communities.
• Superb communication skills, both spoken and written, particularly in complex environments and in conditions of ambiguity.
• Experience working in or with NYCPS.
• Project management experience with a record of accomplishment in leading significant cross functional initiatives in diverse and complex organizational settings.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Salary: $180,000 - $200,000
